Crochet hooks come in a wide range of sizes, but you will often find yourself using the same crochet hook size frequently. For standard crochet hooks, the smaller the hook size, the thinner the yarn you will use and therefore the smaller the outcome. Your yarn tension is also a major factor when it comes to stitch size too and incorrect tension is the leading reason for uneven crochet.

In the UK we tend to use the mm size and the US tends to use a lettering system – US hooks tend to use a 0.25mm system rather than the 0.5mm of the metric system. This means there isn’t always a completely direct translation between the sizes but a 0.25mm difference in hook size won’t make much difference.

So, which crochet hook size should you use? Below I have shown the most common hook sizes – that I use at least, once again your tension may result in needing to use a different hook size :)

Most Common Hooks

DK Yarn

I use a 3.5mm hook as with amigurumi styles you want to reduce the gaps between stitches.

eg. Stylecraft Special, Bonus DK

The recommended hook size to use is between 4-5.5mm.

Chunky Yarn

I tend to use a 4mm or 4.5mm hook when using Aran thickness yarn depending on the project.

eg. Flutterby Chunky

Its recommended to use a hook between 5.5-6.5mm.

S Chunky Yarn

When using chunky chenille I use a 6.5mm hook as the yarn frays frequently.

eg. Yummy, Jellybaby

The recommended hook size to use is between 7-9mm
